MasterCard Card Identification Features

MasterCard has introduced new card design format options and modified several card security features. New card design options offer flexible placement of the MasterCard hologram (card front or back) and introduce the option to use a new holographic magnetic tape, HoloMag™ (card back only). This reference page highlights valid card formats, as well as mandated card security features.

1. The MasterCard hologram shows two interlocking

globes. The word "MasterCard" is repeated across

the background.

2. The 16-digit card number is embossed and must

match the number on the magnetic strip (this number

is displayed on the terminal and/or printed on the

receipt). All MasterCard card numbers start with the

number 5. Check that the same card number appears

on the front and back of the card.

3. The first four digits of the card number are printed under

the embossed number and the two must match

4. Validity period: Only accept cards that are already valid

and have not expired. The start date (if applicable) and

end date are embossed, so the characters feel raised.

5. The account holder's name is also embossed.

1. The magnetic strip contains the encoded data for the

card. It should not be damaged in any way.

2. The word "MasterCard" is printed on the signature

panel in multiple colors at a 45° angle.

Please compare the signature on this panel with the

customer signature on the receipt and make sure they

match exactly.

3. The three-digit card verification code is shown here.

4. The card number (16 or 4 digits) is printed again in
